The Future of HR – Time for Real Transformation by Tony Williams

We all want HR and our HR leaders to be more effective, whilst also postponing the demise of the function, yet it seems that HR can’t make the shift it needs to in order to obtain these goals.

It’s been 15 years since Tony Williams and Peter Reilly published their second book “Strategic HR” and nothing has really changed, with there being a continuation in the conversation around why HR needs transformation and now.

Tony Williams (Founding Partner and Managing Director at Will Exell) has written an interesting whitepaper “The Future of HR – Time for Real Transformation”, which provides some updated ideas on what HR leaders need to do in order to truly transform the function, in the way they have been saying for years. It is obvious that the transformation of HR as a function is not complete in many ways, however the most telling is the lack of value recognition from business leaders, teamed with the limited investment in HR (aside from the occasional systems and process redesign), which has caused the function to enter into a period of stagnation. Given that the challenges facing HR vary between organisations, Tony identifies 8 common themes that HR leaders still need to address to help the function progress.
