Great beer, great talk, great conversation: Food for thought on Microservices in the Inaugural TTN event in Berlin
With the setting sun over the river Spree and the wonderful surrounds of the 2C Spreequartier providing the backdrop, the inaugural event of the Technology Transformation Network in Berlin began.
A large collective of people from diverse backgrounds had gathered to hear some of the best practices and advice around how to adopt microservices in their own systems, and they were not disappointed! Being the compere, Charlie Appleyard of Annapurna Recruitment brought the assembly together for the first course of what was already promising to be an enlightening evening.
Beginning with an illuminating talk by Eberhard Wolff, fellow at innoQ (http://www.infoq.com/), where he at first shared the many pains that can be experienced when attempting to adopt microservices. Framing the challenge eloquently, Eberhard went on to define microservices in terms of their abilities to be continuously deployed as small, independent services with appropriate inter-service contracts and how that can be achieved at various levels. To close out his talk Eberhard then shared the ‘secret sauce’ to successful microservices adoption through the differing monolith-first and microservices-first approaches.
As with any of the TTN events, the talk is the thing that gathers the minds together but it is the resulting conversations and even arguments that are sparked that is where the real action is. Russ Miles (CTO of GoMicro.Services), Eberhard and Oliver Wolf (Principal Consultant, innoQ) then kicked off a collection of open space technology discussions around the hot topics that were on the collective’s minds after Eberhart’s talk.
Conversations ranged from the details of deployment, to the impact on UX and where the GUI resides (with the microservice itself from Eberhard’s talk) and I think it’s fair to say that great ideas were discussed and, most importantly, new connections were made.
Tragically the night had to eventually come to an end, although many were still gathered around the free beers as night wore on; still learning, still heatedly discussing, and I think it’s fair to say all looking forward to the next TTN event in Berlin!
