In this exclusive video for The BTN, Andrew Fox (Group Head of HR, Retail Banking and Wealth Management at HSBC) discusses the popularity of leadership development. Andrew looks at how the leadership development industry has grown, but questions the ability to provide ROI figures on leadership, as it is an intangible characteristic, that is difficult to measure.
He considers how training can affect leadership and development’s measurable worth and whether re-inserting a leader back to their position after training would allow them to keep and implement the change they learnt. Andrew establishes that you can take leaders and make them better, not solely through studying, but through a contextual awareness of the environment and teams within which they work. From this, he advises that value can be added by developing leaders, however, it must remain within the context of the organisation, training large bodies of people, not individuals, with a training programme that is adapted to their organisation’s context, not a ‘textbook example’.
