5 Reason You Didn’t Get the Job
Your application was convincing and you managed to get an interview. You met your potential new boss or colleagues and were excited by the thought of getting the job. However, in the end you never received an offer. Here’s a list of 5 reasons why it might not have worked out for you this time.
You were too keen
Did you arrive at the company more than 1 hour before your actual interview? Did you offer to do some unpaid work placement? It is certainly important to show enthusiasm during your interview, but be careful not to cross the line. It could simply be a bit over the top or even cause an inconvenience for others.
The role was filled internally
It’s common practice for companies to advertise roles, although they already have someone internal in mind. Naturally, companies want to make sure they hire the best person for the job and therefore they simply see who else would be available for the role.
Managers are not always trained at conducting interviews
Many department managers never receive any interview training and simply don’t know how to identify the best talent. Often, their priority is to hire the candidate who brings the best technical knowledge to the job. Therefore, they often disregard an additional important aspect: the actual personality.
The role was never filled
The company neither hired you, nor somebody else. The only reason the role was advertised was to analyse the market and to get free ideas from applicants. In about 6 months time you’ll find the exact same role back online.
You expected to be turned down
Many job seekers come to an interview with a negative mindset. Looking for a job can be a very demotivating time during which your confidence can reach new lows. This can be particularly true for people who have been out of work for a long period of time. Therefore, it is crucial that you change your mindset. Start expecting success from every interview you go to and greet the HR manager with a firm handshake and a smile.
